Upgrade your denim

Across the United States, more offices are encouraging “workplace casual” for their employees. How you dress says a lot about you, your approach to your job and other aspects of life. Think hard boys. This means that corporate and casual style merge to redefining work attire. The key to finding balance in loosened dress code is to look smart, not sloppy. So, what should you do to prepare for the change? Upgrade, baby.

No Maid? No Problem.

When designers came up with non-iron shirts for men, they were finally figuring out what works for guys in real life. And most guys don’t like to iron. Non-iron shirts allow you can look polished all day long without effort. Many are stain resistant and are a savior for the accident-prone. Plus, they’re easy to care for. Surely, men for men must have designed these shirts. Who else would know how the male brain works?

Mix and Match.

Now, keep the non-iron shirt in mind. This piece is perfect for the office and is a great closet staple. The next step is pairing it with the right pants. Today, many work places encourage business casual wear, but still expect their employees to look presentable. Sometimes it’s a fine line to tow. Make sure your jeans pull together your outfit making you look polished. A few work-fouls are: pants with rips, excessive bleaching, stonewashed denim, and no over-the-top embellishments. Keep it simple.

Crisp Jeans Make the Man.

Nowadays, the urban look is still fresh, but emphasizes less of the hip-hop image. Slouchy and relaxed, of the moment jeans have a rebellious attitude and are classic denim’s redheaded stepchild. These jeans run in look best in hues of indigo and the waistband should hit on the hips below the navel. Perfect for the office and going out, nice-fitting denim clean up well but still maintain the casual vibe. Done well, dark denim can be dressed up with a blazer and nice shirt, replacing black slacks as a closet staple.

Designer Jeans for Men: The Closet’s MVP

Jeans are the MVP of a man’s wardrobe. Even with MVP status, denim typically isn’t the most expensive or flattering item you own. Jeans’ popularity stems from their ample versatility. This wardrobe staple can easily be dressed up or down depending on the circumstance. Despite the commonality of jeans, finding a quality-fitting pair is a challenge. In the following are a few tips to keep in mind while jean hunting.

Figure out where you’ll be sporting them- what’s their purpose? Do you wear a suit five days a week and only don jeans on the weekend? Or you have a job with a casual dress code that enables you to wear them daily? If you only wear jeans on the weekend for going out or lounging you have limited restrictions, your goal should be to find a pair that’s both comfortable and good-looking. Yet, if game plan is to wear those babies’ to work, remember that subtly is important.

Just because they are designer jeans, doesn’t mean you should wear them to work. Another tip to keep in mind while shopping is that the pair should work not only with tennis shoes, but also dress shoes and boots. The key gentlemen, is versatility.

The top three jean styles: Regular, Relaxed and Loose.

Regular fit- traditional and somewhat slim-fitting such as offered by Paper Denim and Cloth

Relaxed fit- features an extra half-inch in the rear like these by 7 for All Mankind Relaxed Straight Leg Jeans

Loose fit- is cut with additional fabric in the butt and thigh (one and four inches) Armani Jeans "J07" Denim Jeans

Jean Leg Styles

Boot-cut is usually flared around the ankle with a slight dip to the back Seven for All Mankind Men's Bootcut

Flare- wider cut around the calf extending down to the foot Moschino Flare Denim Jeans

Straight- straight seam lines from the thigh to ankle, some styles have slight tapering. Our favorite is Lucky Brand Denim Vintage Straight Jean

Skinny - like their female equivalents these jeans tend to evoke images of those 80's rockers with the exception those were in spandex. While there aren't alot of products in this space you may want to check out the Wrangler 47 Men's "Luray" Lowrise Skinny Jeans in Black.

Made in….

Most quality brands use Japanese, Italian, or American denim, but you'll also find some exceptions along the way. Also you'll be seeing more quality Chinese denim moving into the quality designer denim market. Also some designers use soft Zimbabwean denim, which is stained with organic vegetable dye. Among countries’ exports are small differences, but the overall fit and characteristics are relative. Practically you'll see more significant differences not just in the origin of the denim, but more in the brand/style being sold than anything else. The true denim afficiando will argue the point, but practically we don't think you'll see or feel a big difference since it's really up to the designer to put together a perfect match.

Wash

Does the wash fit you and your style? This is where personal preference is the driving force as well as the purpose behind your purchase. For example, many companies are frowing upon employees wearing distressed washes/finishes to the office, but have no problem with a dark, lightly distressed wash. Typically the darker washes are a little more formal and according to our sources will grow in popularity through 2007 with the overly distressed looks beginning to fade.

Indigo or Dark Wash

Jean washes go with trends. If you’re planning on investing in a nice pair, make it a classic wash in ‘true denim’ or indigo. Dark washes are timeless and won’t leave you dated looking (example- guy in the grocery store with bad stonewashed, tapered jeans from 1990.) Dark denim can be dressed up with the right shirt and accessories. A pair of nice shoes, watch and pressed shirt easily transitions a daytime look into nightwear.

Slightly Faded

This style is restricted to a casual look but cleans up well with a nice jacket and shirt.

Dirty

The wash is a transparent rusty-brown color over blue denim with an edgy vibe. Some washes are subtle, suitable for work, while others are more extreme; look worn-in, almost industrial.

Designer Jean Details

Avoid styles with excessive embellishments. Embellishments are trendy and may go out of style before you have a chance to even break them in. There are exceptions and as you know there is a time and place for everything. What I do is take time to run through the clearance section not to find great deals, but to look for trends that are fading. While a subtle embellishment is still fashionable, the more dramatic embellishments are fading.

Fit of your designer jeans

Finding what works for you is essential. No matter how great the style is- if it’s not flattering-don’t wear it. Now, here are a few essential tests the jeans must survive to become a closet staple.

Wedgie Check

Make sure they look good from all angles. (And I do mean I want you to check out your butt in the mirror. No body wants to see your perma-wedgie.)

Tight Pants Check

Examine the overall fit. Make sure the legs, crotch and waist areas aren’t too tight. Also keep in mind that most denim shrinks- especially in the length. Buy them a little long, because even in they’re labeled ‘pre-washed’ they still may shrink - abandoning you with ankle-biter pants.

Comfort Check

Take a trial run around the dressing room. Walk around and see if they chafe. Sit down. Do they bunch up to much or dig into your skin? Are they itchy or too stiff or soft and pliable? Check to see if the pockets work for your wallet and keys.

A good pair of jeans should be comfortable and functional.

Belt and Shoes Check

Do the belt loops work with your belt? Yes, belt loops do come in different sizes and don’t work for all belt styles. This will also show you where the pants hit on your waistline. Save yourself the trouble and wear your favorite belt and shoes while shopping for a quick test.

Designer Jean Maintenance

After all that trouble, don’t ruin them.

  • Wash jeans inside out. That’ll help maintain color and the original look longer.
  • Don’t put them in the dryer- hang dry or put them on a towel- it’ll keep them from shrinking and keep you from wearing man-capris.

No luck?

Try on another pair. Take several pairs into the dressing room and don’t be afraid to ask the sales person for help. It’s their job. Finding jeans isn’t the easiest task, but if you find a nice-fitting classic pair they’ll last a few years.
